Devotional Thought for Sunday, December 7

John 8:31-59

Peace doesn’t always begin quietly. In John 8, Jesus confronts the religious leaders with unsettling truth: real freedom—and therefore real peace—comes only through Him. “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (vv. 31–32).  They were not willing to accept what they heard because instead of softening their hearts, it completely exposed them.

The leaders fired back and claimed to be children of Abraham, but Jesus reveals a deeper reality: without Him, they remain in spiritual slavery. Their hostility grows, but Jesus stands firm, declaring, “Before Abraham was, I am” (v. 58)—a direct claim to divinity.  What a statement!

This passage reminds us that peace with God isn’t sentimental. It begins with truth—often uncomfortable, always necessary. Christ doesn’t offer a fragile peace that avoids conflict; He offers a deep, lasting peace grounded in His unchanging identity and our surrender to it.

Advent invites us to receive the Prince of Peace on His terms—not as we imagine Him to be, but as He truly is.

Reflection: What is God revealing about your heart as you hear from His word?  Are there areas in which you are confronted about the truth that are harder to let go?  How would a posture of surrender and acceptance change your life?
