Devotional Thought for Saturday, December 13

Colossians 3:15: “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”

This is a pretty simple instruction – Let peace rule. Be thankful. No problem, right?

But what’s this “since as members of one body you were called to peace”?

In English we have no plural form of “you” and “your”, but I think that’s what’s used here. The instruction is to the group. This verse is talking about peace as the scaffolding within and throughout our collective heart as believers - the heart that exists between and among us in the Spirit as we live for and follow Jesus.

From The Message: Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness.

We are called to invite and allow (let!) the peace of Christ (unity, safety, harmony, security) to rule. Peace as Ruler means peace is the umpire and decision-maker that directs and controls our collective “church” heart. This brings freedom from fear, anxiety and havoc, as well as contentment, fulfillment, wholeness, and prosperity. Even more peace! As a result, we might not need instruction to be thankful because gratitude would grow (be cultivated) out of our heart’s overflowing response to God’s goodness.

Prince of Peace, please reveal where our collective heart needs Your peace to be a decision-maker. We invite Your peace to rule among us. Help us hear Your voice more clearly. Thank You for coming to dwell among us and giving us Your peace.
