Devotional Guide for Friday, July 22

2 Chronicles 17:1-19

Reflect

Starting with chapter 17, the chronicler presents Jehoshaphat in a very favorable light. He’s compared to King David and his commitment to God (v3), and he did not seek false idols or walk in the ways of Israel but was above reproach in his walk with God (v4). He actively educated and instructed others with the Book of the Law.

Not only was he compared to King David, but there is also a parallel with King Solomon.  Like Solomon, Jehoshaphat’s wealth grew; he received visitors outside of his kingdom that lavished him with gifts (v11) like silver, rams and goats. As Jehoshaphat’s wealth grew, his military strength also increased exponentially. Treasure, wealth, power, and favour from the Lord – talk about a good start to being king!

At the height of Jehoshaphat’s reign, faithfulness and obedience was rewarded with material prosperity; however, as we enter the New Testament, there is a greater emphasis on spiritual prosperity.

Apply

As we consider the entirety of Scripture and the significance of God’s desire for us to live out our faithfulness, in what way has God rewarded you for your obedience?

Perhaps it is a material blessing, but more importantly, maybe it was a spiritual blessing that showed you more about the character of God.
