2 Chronicles 21:4-20

Reflect

Before watching any new movie or TV show release, my wife and I love to read the latest reviews to see whether it’s worth watching (we try to avoid the spoilers). Some of the reviews we read are incredibly positive, which naturally would get us excited to see the movie, but some are negatively alarming (avoid at all cost)!

Jehoram is the first king to receive an entirely negative review by the chronicler; he has nothing too good to say about him. Jehoram committed fratricide, idolatry, caused Edom and Libnah to revolt against Judah, and actively led people to betray God. When he passed, the people made no fire in his honour – his rule was disastrous. This is not a king that I’d get excited to follow!

However, despite Jehoram’s faithlessness, the Lord kept His covenant not to destroy the house of David (verse 7). Even though the nation was in ruins and the people’s hearts were turned to idols, the Lord wrote a letter through Elijah – an act of mercy, even though Jehoram’s rejection of God only led to his death.

Sin often brings consequences, but the story doesn’t have to end there for us! We have a faithful and merciful King that will only lead His people to a fuller and greater joy. This is something we can get excited about!
