Devotional Guide for Friday, August 5

2 Chronicles 25:1-28

Reflect

In the next few chapters, the chronicler writes about the four kings of Judah – Amaziah, Uzziah, Jotham, and Ahaz.  Four kings and four different responses to God!

In our text today, we have Amaziah who started strong and devoted to the Lord, but he did not follow the Lord wholeheartedly (v2). Somewhere underneath his outward display of devotion to the Lord was festering sin that was taking over his heart. The Lord gave him success, but he fell into idolatry while ignoring godly counsel, and God withdrew His blessing (is it just me or do we keep reading about sinful political leaders and the patience of God in a broken world?). He was definitely more like his father Joash than his ancestor David.

The chronicler is making it clear to his audience: as people of God, undivided and exclusive loyalty is the central requirement to follow God, not halfhearted devotion like Amaziah.
Belonging to God is a matter of the heart.

Apply

In what areas of your life do you find yourself divided in following God wholeheartedly?
God’s mercy is found through the different prophets that were sent to give warning to Amaziah.  He continues to desire to shower us with mercy.  How do you think God is trying to get your attention?
