2 Chronicles 36:2-14
Reflect
Some years ago, there was a popular trend in office artwork in the form of motivational posters. These were inspiring and eye-catching ways of challenging those in the office. However, there soon came the backlash and the onset of the de-motivational posters. These were made as flippant and humorous reactions to the motivational posters. One de-motivational poster I remember had the picture of a shipwreck and had the title “Mistakes”. The subtext was, “it could be that the purpose of your life is only to serve as a warning to others”.
While these are hardly the kind of messages one would want to promote, they do fall in line with George Santayana’s quote roughly paraphrased “those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it”. Our passage today records the mistakes of a series of kings who seemed not to learn from the failures of their predecessors.
We have in Scripture the best direction on how to live in such a way that we point others towards Jesus and away from the perils where we might run aground and be defeated. Proverbs 22:3 says, “The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.”
