Devotional Guide for Tuesday, August 23

2 Chronicles 36:15-23

Reflect

As the Chronicler is writing from the perspective of the post-exilic period, he looks back at the destruction of Jerusalem, the exile to Babylon, and finally the invitation for the remnant to return as the fulfillment of God’s Word. There is hope! God is absolutely faithful in His word to us, both in judgement and healing.

In verses 17-19 and 21, did you catch the repeated use of “all” and “everything”? The writer uses the Hebrew word “kōl” five times. God’s judgement is comprehensive and complete. He is purifying both the people and the land after decades and decades of sin and decay. The Chronicler does not diminish the struggle and loss involved in such a process. Judgement is not a pleasant experience! And yet, it is the most effective tool to bring about redemption when one has ignored and turned a blind eye and deaf ear to God.

God’s healing is also just as effective and complete. Recall the promise of God in 2 Chronicles 7:14: “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
