Ezra 5:1-17
Reflect
In the last few chapters, we saw that the people of God had started to rebuild the temple, were met with opposition, and then stopped building for many years. In the passage today, we are told that Haggai and Zechariah prophesy to them and they restart the work of rebuilding.
The book of Haggai, chapter 1:1-12 gives us a few more details to help us understand what is going on. In this book, we see that God speaks through Haggai to call His people to action. God tells them they do not have enough, and they are not satisfied because they neglected to build the Lord’s house. “’You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?’ Declares the Lord Almighty. ‘Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with his own house.’” (Haggai 1:9-10)
They had made their own interests a priority and neglected the work God had given them to do. They were focused on building their own kingdom instead of God’s.

Take a minute to ask God to make us people who are focused on building up His kingdom and not our own.
