Nehemiah 5:1-19
Reflect
Nehemiah was genuinely concerned for the welfare of the people. Men and wives went against their Jewish brothers which had created a wall of injustice that divided the community. As Nehemiah heard the outcry, his moral outrage led to his rebuke towards those who were responsible for their economic oppression and unfairness. How could those people show no compassion or mercy to their fellow Jews? What will bring any nation, people group, community or organization to ruin are the divisions of inequalities and injustices that are caused internally, not externally.
What stands out about Nehemiah in the passage is that he leads by example amid internal strife. He rebukes but he also chooses to live a life that did not put strain on others (v14) by living a life of selflessness (vv16-18). His devotion to God and his love for his fellow people showcases the essence of loving God and loving others.
Apply
In our passage, the division was economic oppression and inequality. As you reflect on your own life, are there any areas or relationships that are currently divided? If so, what steps are you taking to mend what is broken in order to model the essence of loving God and loving others?
