Devotional Guide for Saturday, October1

Acts 10:1-23

Reflect

The passage today starts with a man named Cornelius who was a Gentile that feared God. Jewish people at this time respected these God-fearing Gentiles, but they could not share their lives or homes with them without becoming unclean. In the next part of the story, we see Peter being given a vision from God, a vision in which God shows Peter a number of different animals and tells Peter to eat them. Peter refuses because these animals were considered unclean or common and he has never eaten them before. God responds by saying, “what God has made clean, do not call common.”

God is doing a new thing and He wants Peter on board! He is showing Peter that the gospel is for all, Jews and Gentiles and that God isn’t partial to one group over the other.

When Peter has Cornelius at his house later in the chapter, he is breaking social and cultural norms. But he is moving with God into the next part of the story.

We also get to be involved in the next part of the story. The part where God’s love breaks through social and cultural barriers and invites all to know the love of Jesus.
