Devotional Guide for Friday, September 30

Acts 9:32-42

Reflect

There are two points that I find captivating in these verses. Firstly, God uses ordinary but faithful people to do great things. As we look at both Aeneas and Dorcas in our text, we see that prayer led to miracles which led others to believe through witnessing the power of God. The outcome of the prayer itself was not just the answered prayer, but salvation to those who witnessed it--risen individuals led others to have faith in the risen Lord.

Peter, out of all people, was the one who was used by God in such a great way. Remember, he was rebuked by Jesus, pulled a sword on a high priest’s servant, and he denied Jesus three times during one of the most important moments in history.

Secondly, the Christian gospel is amazingly practical. Dorcas was full of good works and charity; she made the widows tunics and other garments. Many people were weeping because they had lost a valuable human being. This is an amazing example sacrifice and service.

Apply

As ordinary people, filled with extraordinary potential through the Holy Spirit, who are the people we are praying for? How might God want to use you in those relationships today?
What is one act of service that you can intentionally carry out that you wouldn’t normally consider?
