Colossians 3:12-4:1
Reflect
William Barclay, a Scottish scholar, writes, “It is most significant to note that every one of the virtues and graces listed has to do with personal relationships between man and man. There is no mention of virtues like efficiency, cleverness, even diligence and industry – not that these things are not important. But the great basic Christian virtues are the virtues which govern and set the tone of human relationships. Christianity is community.”
As God’s people, we are placed in a position, through Christ, where our old humanity has been taken off, so that we may be clothed with the garments of Christ’s character. We do this by allowing God’s word to dwell richly (v17), while putting into practice, love and the many other virtues listed in different relational settings: household and family, marriage, workplace, friends etc. It’s within these settings that we discover our genuine spirituality that is found as new creations who are made into the character of Jesus.
At times, relationships can be challenging! But we are no longer bound by our vices but blessed by Christ virtues. We have been given a new heart to wrestle and respond in the way that Christ would respond.
