Luke 2:21-40
Reflect
Here in Canada, we celebrate today as Boxing Day. What are the origins of Boxing Day? One might think this is not a day set aside to dispose of the boxes that housed gifts that were given, or a day to start putting away all the decorations we have decked our halls with. Actually, this holiday comes from Great Britain where it was a day set aside to allow those that served in the homes of the wealthy on Christmas Day to go to their own homes and celebrate Christmas. They were often sent with boxes containing gifts, bonuses and perhaps some leftover food. So, this would be a day to journey home with the rewards from a year of work.
In today’s passage Joseph, Mary and Jesus are beginning a journey. For Joseph and Mary, it was a journey towards Nazareth. For Jesus, it was a journey towards the cross. Simeon and Anna began to see the fulfillment of all that was given to us through the Christ child. As we look towards this next year and what it might hold, I pray that we will remember that we go into this journey through 2023 with the greatest gift, the Son of God given for us. May God bless you as you go.
