Psalm 91
Reflect
The psalmist was facing insurmountable, potentially life-threatening dangers which would make anyone’s physical, mental, and emotional health melt away. He could have chosen to distract himself, take matters into his own hands, or curse at the living God, but instead he declared his personal trust, with laser sharp focus, in God as his sure protection.
What’s interesting to note is that in verse 14, the speaker changes from the psalmist to God. From here we see God’s declaration for the psalmist! It is because he loves God that God will deliver, protect, answer, rescue and satisfy. The psalmist can take refuge in the living God because he knows Him.
For us to have laser sharp focus in God as our sure protection during struggle, we must know Him. It’s not to say that we won’t doubt, face unbelief, immense struggle, or anger in challenging times, but to know God is to know His promises and His ways. Which means that we can trust Him in complete surrender even when life doesn’t make sense.
Morning prayer
God, I confess that my struggles and challenges can overwhelm me, but draw my focus away from my circumstances and enable me that I may have laser sharp focus on You. Enlarge my heart with praise and declaration that You are above what I am going through. To You be the glory.
