John 5:31-47

Reflect

I have been serving at McKernan for over 20 years now. Love McKernan. When I consider the amazing sisters and brothers that I’ve shared this pilgrimage with, it astounds me. I have been blessed.

Yet, in my soul, I feel that I owe you all an apology. For the better part of my pastoring, I have been involved in having Biblically based courses the core part of our ministry plan. A careful study of God’s word is vital to following Jesus. Yet, the recent Christmas celebration reminded us that the work of God was the Word of God became flesh. His work caused Jesus to be born in a manger and His birth provoked the evil slaughtering of the infants.

God reveals Himself by working in the most desperate situations. His works exposes the depravity of man into which He offers hope. God with us was never meant to be fully experienced by fervently studying written text alone. I am sorry for my role in causing there to be a gap between our study of Scripture and our doing what Jesus did. Jesus said, “For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me” (Jn.5:36).

Jesus’s works changed the lives of evil tax collectors, blind beggars, and abused prostitutes. His works continue to change lives as His love comes through you and me to the most desperate.

Can we, together, give evidence that the Father has sent us by our works of love to the hurting?
