Preparation for Sunday, January 29

John 10:1-11; Hebrews 4:12-13

Today we continue a sermon series exploring a number of different practices that will create the context for God to deepen our relationship with Him, with one another and with our neighbour.

Today we will look at the practice of “Listening Prayer.” In John 10, Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd (vs11,14). In verses 4 and 5, Jesus describes His followers as sheep who relationally hear and recognize the voice of the Shepherd.

Very often, we limit prayer to a one-way conversation where we talk to God, often laying out our needs and concerns, and then go on our way. The picture Jesus gives in John 10 suggests that prayer also involves listening for God’s interaction with us. This dynamic of God’s relational voice is also envisioned in Hebrews 4:12 where God’s Word is seen as alive and active.

God’s Spirit can apply the truth of God’s Word quite directly to the true state of our inner being as we learn to listen. Because God is Truth and will never contradict Himself, His revealed written Word remains the standard by which we discern God’s voice.

Apply

  • How have you experienced listening to God?
  • Why is prayer inadequate when it focuses primarily on us lifting our lists to God?
  • Why is it so important to ensure that God’s revealed written Word is the ultimate standard to help us discern the voice of God?
  • Ask God to work in your heart and in the hearts of all who will be attending our services online or in person today.

Pray

  • Pray that those who are new to the church will be welcomed and find meaningful relationships.
  • Pray for our Children’s Ministry Pastor, Jerilyn Bayer.
