John 8:31-59

Reflect

In 1979, Bob Dylan released the album Slow Train Coming.  The opening track on this record was the song “Gotta Serve Somebody”.  Through the lyrics, Dylan asserts that no matter who you are, no matter what your social status, financial status, we either serve God or we serve the devil. This song had mixed reviews; while it won the 1980 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, John Lennon was so offended by this song that he wrote a rebuttal song entitled “Serve Yourself”. Through this song we are confronted with the question, “Who am I serving?”.

Jesus confronted the religious leaders of the day, calling them to know the truth of their situation and that in knowing the truth they would be set free from slavery to sin. Jesus called those who were listening to see who it was that they were serving. By verse 44 He make it abundantly clear that, while His audience was convinced that they were serving God, the truth is that they were serving the devil.

Apply

My prayer is that we would know Jesus as the Way, the Truth and the Life, and that we would be set free from slavery to sin.
