John 9:1-12
Reflect
We have the tradition of watching “The Sound of Music” over the Christmas season. Captain Von Trapp and Maria sing together a song “I must have done something good”, expressing that their fortune of falling in love must have come as a reward for something they had done in their youth or childhood.
In our passage today, people questioned why the man was born blind. Was it a consequence of a sin he committed, or his parents committed? We often think that way, that good or bad circumstances have come from our choices. Jesus’ answer surprised them all – this man’s circumstances were for such a time as this, when Jesus would display His work in his life, demonstrating and declaring that He is the light of the world! In chapter 8, Jesus declared that before Abraham was born, He existed, and here He recreates vision with dirt, as He also created humanity from dirt.
Apply
The Life Application Bible says that “when you suffer from disease, tragedy, or disability, try not to ask, “Why did this happen to me?” or “What did I do wrong?” Instead, ask God to give you strength for the trial and a clearer perspective on what is happening. Remember that He has the power to recreate!
