John 12:12-19

Reflect

The King is coming, the King is coming! Imagine the crowd! The Jewish historian, Josephus, estimates that the Passover crowd during this time would have been around 2,700,000 people – that's a lot of mouths to feed. These were the people that were either pronouncing praise and identifying Jesus as the Messiah, or judgement and rejection.

With so many witnesses who had been there since the resurrection of Lazarus, there stood the disciples who walked closest with the Messiah, yet, according to John’s writing, they did not understand the nature and work of Christ (v16). It wasn’t until Jesus was glorified (crucified, raised, and ascended) that everything started to make sense for them. But then you have this image of the Pharisees and their hostility - witnesses of the supernatural, yet blind to God. They were filled with the knowledge of the Scriptures, yet unaware of the fulfillment of the prophecies.

Public miracles do not always produce personal faith. That's the condition of our heart – it might be right in front of us, yet we may be completely blind to the nature and work of Christ.

Apply

Perhaps you know a lot about Christianity, or maybe you’ve grown up in the church but have often felt like something was missing.

As you reflect on the triumphant entry, in what ways does this historical event encourage and affect your faith?
