John 12:37-50

Reflect

What is light?  Britannica Online answers this question this way “Through the sense of sight, light is a primary tool for perceiving the world and communicating within it.”

Light enables us to see the world we live in.  Our capacity to comprehend and communicate effectively is overwhelmingly impacted by light.  Without light our world becomes very small and we find ourselves very limited in our ability to perceive and to understand what we encounter.   One only has to close their eyes and begin to move around the space you are in, to see how quickly we can find ourselves in a painful or unsettling situation.

Jesus explains to his listeners that he has come into the world as a light that removes darkness from those who would believe that he is the Son of God sent by the Father to save those who would surrender their lives to him.   Light by its very nature eliminates darkness, it reveals what is hidden in the darkness and helps us see clearly.  Jesus does this too.  Jesus scatters the darkness; he reveals those things which are hidden in darkness.  He helps us see the world as it is and helps us avoid painful situations by revealing what we can avoid.
