Hebrews 2:1-9
Reflect
Have you ever ignored the warnings signs of something that eventually led to some serious consequences?
During my early university years, I just loved playing sports. I would join different leagues and tournaments until I got my fill for the week. Long story short, in a matter of 4-6 months, I had several injuries: pulled bicep tendon, sprained MCL, and a pulled hamstring (grade 2). As I continued to ignore the signs that I had made an idol out of my love for sports, I was finally humbled one morning as I woke up with Bell’s Palsy.
For some of us it might be warning signs regarding taking better care of our health, avoiding some potentially toxic relationships, unhealthy habits that have developed, or many other circumstances.
For the audience of Hebrews, it seemed as if they were ready to replace Jesus for something seemingly better (v.1). The author urgently warns them not to neglect the truths of the gospel because the stakes were too high. This was a matter of life and death – to drift away and ignore the gospel is to be met with some serious consequences and yet, the opposite is also true! To abide and follow Jesus is to be met with wonderful and eternal benefits (v.5-9).
