Hebrews 10:26-39

Reflect

When you read a waiver form for an activity, or the list of possible side effects for a new medication, do you read the entire form and consider the risks? Perhaps you simply skim over the details quickly before signing off, believing that the benefits far outweigh the potential hazards. In following Jesus, the benefits and the hazards are both very real.

Following a beautiful description of the New Covenant that Christ enacted for us (vs16-23), the writer of Hebrews follows up with a severe warning for believers who later renounce and abandon the faith. The grace that they have tasted and received under the New Covenant is so profound, the price that Jesus paid is so costly, that to later reject it is deserving of judgement and raging fire. Don’t skim over these details.

Following Jesus, we are told will involve a lifetime of perseverance. There will be conflict and suffering. There is a price we pay to say “no” to the things of this world in order to say “yes” to God. We need to acknowledge the reality of this, not ignoring the risks and later becoming disillusioned and disappointed with God when things get tough. But, in persevering, the cost we pay today will pale in the light of eternity. Don’t shrink back. Keep a firm grasp on your confidence in Him because He is faithful and true!
