John 18:28-40
Reflect
Try to imagine a full-term pregnancy going unnoticed. Today’s passage is “pregnant” with symbolism that we would do well paying attention to.
Tomorrow the Jewish Feast of Unleavened Bread begins. The Feast ends with the April 12 Passover. It is no coincidence that these events always coincide with the Christian events of this weekend.
In v.28, those oppressing Jesus did not want to defile themselves by going into a closed building where Gentiles would be. That would break tradition. They were focused on the party as they prepared for Friday, the day they would kill the Passover lamb in the spectacle that is the temple, which became the same time that Jesus would become the Ultimate Passover Lamb killed on desolate Golgotha in order to take humanity’s sins upon Himself. Passover is not just a tradition to be observed. Christ is our Passover (1 Cor.5:7).
Further on, Pilate asks the question that all generations have asked, “What is Truth?” “Pregnant” moment. The question should be “who” not “what”. The answer is the One that is the Truth – the man Jesus Christ.
This is Passion Week, Holy Week. How do your plans allow for God to reveal to you His ways? How will your traditions enhance your embrace of what God is doing, rather than become a spectacle in themselves? Who is God calling you to include?
