John 18:15-27
Reflect
Have you ever denied doing or saying something due to embarrassment, fear, or shame? Think back to a moment of confusion, of being found out, or accusation. The desire to self-protect runs deep within our humanity.
In the sweeping events that unfolded on that Passover night, picture yourself with Peter. The atmosphere is charged, and people are on edge. Suspicion surrounds all those connected with Jesus. Peter is fearful and confused, trying to take it all in. His usual boldness is subdued by the darkness of this night. It’s one thing to confidently walk beside Jesus in the light. It’s entirely different to find courage alone in the shadows. Luke 22:62 tells us that Peter wept bitterly when he heard the rooster crow.
We know the story does not end there and Peter was later restored (John 21:15-22). But there is another point we need to consider. Stop and read Luke 22:31-32…
Jesus, repeating Simon’s name twice, is emphasizing an important truth here. God is allowing Satan to sift Peter. Satan would intend this to be Peter’s downfall, but God will use it for Peter’s growth and maturity, and for the strengthening of all believers.

What are the moments of shame and condemnation that God actually wants to use to refine and purify us, to give us strength and boldness in His Kingdom? Are you willing to give those to the Lord that He would transform them for your good?
