Devotional Guide for Monday, April 24

Genesis 4:1-16

Reflect

How do you enter a building? I would guess that 99.9% of the time we enter a building through a door. All other means of entry are most likely locked or protected. Around our homes we try to eliminate places that are not well lit and areas that might provide hiding places for those who have nefarious intent. In John 10 Jesus gives a warning about any who want to enter through any alternative means. Those individuals who would climb in some other way are most often up to no good.

In our passage today, God gives a word of caution to Cain about such a situation. Sin is personified and depicted as a being that is not welcome. Sin is sneaking around you, and it has ill intent. Beware. Cain does not heed God’s warning and he lets sin master him, rather than the other way around. The result is Abel’s death and Cain’s banishment.

Are there places in our lives that we are not being vigilant in protecting? Are we keeping areas of our life in the dark? (See Psalm 139:12) Let Jesus in to all the spaces of your life and the light of His life be a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path.
