Genesis 12:6-20
Reflect
It’s easy for us to ask why Abram would leave the land that God had called him to and head down to Egypt. After all, he just built an altar and God promised Abram and his offspring to be the recipients of this land!
Some commentators have mentioned Abram’s disobedience or lack of faithfulness, but the text doesn’t give room or fault Abram for making the trip. The sin does not hide itself in the journey, but in the deceit.
There was a famine in the land, and Abram decided to visit what was possibly the breadbasket at the time – at least to Abram and many others. In order to save himself while telling the “truth”, Abram eases his conscious by saying that Sarai is his sister – a half-truth. Judgement inevitably follows.
But despite Abram’s sin, God extends grace! The Egyptians released Abram, unscathed, even after breaking their ethical code of truthfulness. Even after the hosts were offended, Abram was sent away with all that he had including the animals and slaves that were given to him by Pharaoh.
