Genesis 21:8-21
Reflect
From Sarah’s perspective, Ishmael would never share the inheritance with her son Isaac. Ishmael was not seen as part of God’s plan according to her. For Abraham, it was displeasing and difficult to cast away Hagar and Ishmael (v12).
The character of God is incredibly telling in this situation (it’s the first record of single parenting). When they had departed, God heard the voice of the boy (v17). God opened Hagar’s eyes to a well of water where she would give Ishmael a drink (v19). God was also with the boy as he grew up. When Hagar was separated by the people that would’ve been the closest to her, the Lord displayed His kindness, gentleness and comfort.
Our God is not a distant God. He is not only ‘moved’ by our pains, but He is an active participant in every season of wilderness and struggle. If He was caring for Hagar and Ishmael, how much more is He intimately involved in our lives as “children of the free woman (Gal 4:31)” and not the slave woman?
