Genesis 25:19-34

Reflect

In the account in Genesis, Esau comes home completely famished, and asks Jacob for some of the stew that he had made, and Jacob, seeing an opportunity, convinces Esau to give up his birthright for some stew. Now specifically, I don’t think I’d give up something as significant as my birthright for some stew, but how often are we tempted to exchange what’s truly important for such fleeting pleasures?

Whether it’s an opportunity to make a quick buck, even if it's maybe a little bit unethical, or a second look at that inappropriate image that comes up on your phone, or a chance to spread that gossip that you heard in order to try to increase your reputation by making someone else look bad.

Whatever the temptation is, our culture has wired us to be so easily enticed by immediate gratification. I’ll give up whatever for that “thing” now. Ask God to reveal to you today what that might look like in your life, and ask Him for the discipline to stay the course, and keep your eyes on what truly matters.
