Genesis 34:1-31
Reflect
Here in Genesis 34, we see people making selfish choices, thinking only of satisfying their own desires. Satisfying the selfish desire for gratification of sensuality or for revenge ends up exacting a very high cost on those who are brought into the situation unwillingly or unknowingly. Our hearts go out to those who are victims of such atrocious actions, and we long to see justice done. Romans 12 reminds us of what God tells us in Deuteronomy about seeking revenge. God will repay those who commit horrible acts.
Here at McKernan we desire to live in right relationship with God, one another, and our neighbour. When we live in community there undoubtedly will be times when, intentionally or not, we are hurt or offended by someone. There is a part of us that wants to exact our own justice for the offense. In Scripture, we are told that one of the fruit of the Holy Spirit working in us is self-control. Perhaps more than ever, self-control is needed in circumstances such as these. My prayer for each one of us is that we will encourage the fruit of self-control in our lives.
