Genesis 38:1-30
Reflect
What we see here in Genesis 38 is another situation where people in the Bible end up making poor choices. Judah’s sons both lose their life due to their wicked ways. As we follow the story, we can see that Judah himself is not the exemplary role model for his sons. And yet, it is through this very family line we trace the genealogy of Jesus (see Matthew 1:1-17 and Luke 3:23-38). What do we do with this passage? I think this hardly condones the sexual practices that are found in this chapter. What I believe we can take from Genesis 38 and how those found in it are directly brought into the blood line of Jesus family, is that God can still use people and situations where there have been some very poor choices made. God does not disqualify you from being part of His plan because you have made mistakes. Through the actions Tamar took, Judah is brought to face his own sin. His hypocrisy is exposed and his desire to have Tamar burned is quenched when she shows him that he is not able to punish her without implicating himself. Undoubtedly there will be far-reaching consequences to these matters. God in His sovereignty still choses to use people who are not perfect. He can use each one of us.
