Genesis 39:1-23
Reflect
What a wild life Joseph lived! Thrown into a well, sold as a slave, placed into Potiphar’s household and in charge of his whole estate, then tossed into prison. Many of the things that he suffered were caused by the actions of others, not his own doing. Through all circumstances, we see a consistency in his life, he works hard, maintains his integrity and knows that God is with him. Others also see that God is with him (v3). God is with him in the palace, and in the prison. In both places, Joseph stays true to his own character, and to his God.
Bob Deffinnbaugh points out that Joseph’s time in Potiphar’s household prepared him for when he would eventually serve as the second highest official in Egypt – he would have learned the language, the culture and administration. His imprisonment saved him from the advances of Potiphar’s wife, and there he was eventually introduced to Pharaoh, leading him to an incredible future and the fulfillment of God’s plan for the salvation of his family.

Circumstances can quickly change in our lives. Let us live each moment taking to heart Joseph’s example, knowing that God is with us, diligently using the gifts He has given us and living with integrity. We will be a living testimony that no matter what, God is with us.
