Genesis 40:1-23

Reflect

Joseph is living the reality that refutes karma. His “good” actions are resulting in bad consequences. Joseph has some history with dreams and interpretations (ch.37). So far, they result in him being pushed on his belief that God is really with him. He may have been taught that God never leaves us, but it sure must feel like He does. Recall, Jacob’s “favourite” son is not just waiting for days, weeks, or months, he is waiting for years. For ten years God leaves him all alone in a rat-infested dark dungeon. Yet, he still can believe in God’s truth coming in dreams (v8). He is so desperate that he is willing to accept a human solution to gaining his freedom, which only results in him experiencing the trauma of being forgotten again.

Is God still with Joseph though he feels utterly forgotten? Is He with you?

We are in a series of “practices” that are meant to have us align closer with God and with others. Might I suggest adding the spiritual practice of “waiting”? I have found none other so painful, none other with the potential of making us so like Jesus. Joseph must wait, and so do you and I. Sometimes all we have left are some faint promises that we heard God give to us in a dream, and today in our dungeon we must allow it to give us hope.

Feeling forsaken? Be radical and still obey with a hopeful heart. Let’s talk.
