Preparation for Sunday, July 2

1 Samuel 20

This morning Pastor Mike will continue in our summer sermon series entitled “David, An Authentic Walk with God.”

Today we will explore the remarkable and complex nature of the friendship between David and Jonathan.  Two men whose friendship was tested through the fiercest of trials.

Would this relationship stand up to the pressures of family alienation and the pressure of advancement of self above, and perhaps to the detriment of a friend?  What were some of the qualities of this bond David and Jonathan had?

Here at McKernan, one of the practices that we desire to follow is that of Authentic Friendship.  To be sure, what we see here would fall within the description of a friendship that is authentic. How can we use what we see in the lives of David and Jonathan as a reference for our friendships?

Apply

  • How can we evaluate our own relationships with family and friends in relation to what we see here in 1 Samuel 20.
  • Where might we be challenged to invest more in the existing relationships that we have?
  • Where might we be called to reach out to people whom we regularly encounter to establish an authentic friendship?

Pray

  • Pray that those who are new to the church will be welcomed and find meaningful relationships.
  • Pray for our Children’s Ministry Pastor, Jerilyn Bayer
  • Pray for the Children’s Ministry Associate, Annette Faszer.
