Exodus 5:1-21
Reflect
Romans 8:31b asks the question, “If God is for us, who can be against us?”. I think there are times when we use this verse to steel our resolve, not just by minimizing the strength of our enemy, but sometimes to the point of denying their very existence.
In today’s passage Moses is not in a place where he is wondering who is against him. I believe for Moses it would have felt like everyone was against him. Further to that point, the scope of our passage does not resolve this tension. When Moses follows God’s instructions, he becomes more of a pariah than he already was.
For those of us who know the rest of the story, in the end Moses is faithful to the call, and God is faithful to His promise. But in the meantime, this is a challenging time for Moses.
There may be times for us when we feel like we are in a similar spot, where even those who we are trying to serve are opposing us. It is in these times where we must keep coming back to remind ourselves of the call to “Go to the nations” that may be hostile to the gospel, and also to “live in unity” among our brothers and sisters. God is faithful, and He truly is for you.
