Exodus 14:1-31

Reflect

One might be tempted to wonder how the Israelites could doubt that they were going to be delivered from the situation they were in. They had just seen the Egyptians send them on their way through the plagues, culminating with the events of the night of Passover. Then there is a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night that accompanies, in fact leads them. That same pillar of fire moves to be their rearguard separating them from the Egyptian army.

I must admit I find the response of the Israelites in verse 11 to be a bit hard to grasp. And yet we have so many ways that God has revealed Himself to us. We have the Word that became flesh and lived among us. We have the Holy Spirit that resides in each of us who believe and have called on the name of the Lord to save us. We are reminded through God’s Word of the degree of God’s love for us and for a world that so desperately needs to hear of the love of God. And I then must not be so critical of what is taking place in Exodus 14.

God is patient with us when we fail to see His love, His protection and provision.
