Exodus 17:1-7

Reflect

Having no water to drink was a real problem, but addressing the crisis was an even greater problem. The people of Israel confronted Moses and demanded water (v2), even though it was obvious that there was no water available, which only revealed their dysfunction. Behind the absence of water was the unbelief found in their relationship with God.

The people had at least two false assumptions: 1) they did not wait for the Lord’s provision and assumed that they needed to take matters into their own hands; 2) they were free to test the Lord in the same way that the Lord tested them (v7).

Even though this is a classic example of mistrust found among God’s people, the Lord would only demonstrate His character as unfailing, reliable, and gracious. The Lord did not move and respond in anger, but in patience towards these newly formed people.

It’s shocking to see God’s people as ungrateful and lacking faith after an amazing event of deliverance, yet at the same time, the text reveals our own tendency to serve ourselves and to not recognize and trust God’s provision and presence for our daily needs. How many times have we grumbled when expectations in life were not met?
