Psalm 123
Reflect
Psalms 120-134 are the “Songs of Ascent”, Psalms sung by those on pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the three annual feasts. While David wrote some of them, beyond the Holy Spirit’s inspiration we don’t know the human author of Psalm 123. What we do know is that to communicate the importance of trusting the Lord, they made the comparison of servants looking to masters or maids to mistresses, positions of dependence. Think of living in Israel around the time Jesus and traveling from northern Israel up to Jerusalem with your family for Passover. As you draw near to Jerusalem your gaze rises and your eyes fall upon the Temple – the centrepiece of your faith and life! As you sing this song you recognize your dependence on Him and thank Him for protecting you on your journey.
This Psalm also reflects on being “filled with contempt” and the “scorn of those at ease.” Those who refused to make the pilgrimage mocked you. In spite of that, you are thankful you made the journey.

Where is your journey of faith taking you? What are you considering or looking forward to as you travel through life? Are you depending on Him and trusting in His mercy and goodness? Are you willing to stand with Jesus even if others mock your faith and commitment?
