Psalm 131
Reflect
Although the circumstances are neither written nor apparent, David expresses his trust in the Lord and invites his listeners to do the same. Have you ever considered that faith and trust were much easier as a child? If you got hurt, you would most likely run to the person or guardian closest to you. If you grew up believing in a white-bearded man clothed in red, you would trust that there were presents underneath the Christmas tree. If your friend mentioned buying the latest video game, you would take their word for it and expect to see it when you go to their house after school. However, as we age, we develop our reasoning abilities and might not exhibit the same level of faith we once did.
In this Psalm, we find David comparing the faith of a believer with the qualities of a young child who looks to their parent with unwavering certainty and reliance. He assumes the posture of a humble child, looking to their parent in times that require trust. This doesn’t imply that the believer is naive, but rather that they are positioned in surrender and dependence on their heavenly Father (Matt 18:3).

How can we cultivate and maintain a childlike faith and trust as we grow older and face more complex situations?
