Psalm 146

Reflect

In the words of Charles Spurgeon, “We are now among the world of Hallelujahs…” as we approach the final five psalms.

My four-year old daughter has a book called, “Scarlett’s Spectacles.” The author, Janet Surette, writes about a little girl who wakes up each day putting on her grumpy spectacles. Her daily experiences are all seen through the lens of her grumpiness which result in being whinier and more ungrateful. It’s not until she chooses to put on her glad pair of spectacles that she begins to see the world in a new way.

Similarity, praising God is a daily choice. Often our feelings and our circumstances dictate whether we praise God or not, but the psalmist makes note not to trust in the perishable and temporary (v3) and to look to the eternal (v10) instead. This is not to diminish the weight of challenging situations when praising God is the last thing we want to do (there is room for lament!), but this is a call for God’s people to separate the praiseworthiness of God whether we have a good day or not. No matter how much our circumstances change, He will always remain the same: good, faithful, loving, all-powerful, all-knowing, all-wonderful.

Apply

Circumstances should not control our praise, but praise should control our response to our circumstances. How does this speak to you?
