Galatians 4:21-24
Reflect
Today we dive into yet another attempt by the Apostle Paul to save the church from becoming well-intentioned, yet in bondage to the law. By this point in our journey through Galatians, you’ve caught that Paul has come at this from many angles. He does this as a bold reaction to the false teaching practices of some other early church giants, who were also designated as Apostles. Paul is so immensely adamant because he sees that freedom is never accomplished on a weak, superficial foundation. For the Gospel to truly be good news, it must be embraced as Jesus intended for all.
To truly appreciate today’s passage you must come back for tomorrow’s devotional, but I’ll get us started.
With each of today’s images, another chain is wrapped around our freedom. Hagar, the slave woman was forced to bear a child as a result of faithless scheming to force a covenant, resulting in division, sin, and abandonment. Paul comes on strong as says, “Look at you all, you are forcing others to a law that you know is incapable of living up to”. There is no gospel in this slavery to the law.
Paul is opposing the spiritual giants of the early church. How do you make certain that your beliefs and practices don’t drift into the oncoming traffic?
Today, step out and trust Jesus as He includes you in freeing someone in bondage.
