Galatians 5:9-15

Reflect

We have undoubtedly heard the phrase “one step forward, two/three steps back”. In other words, progress is made but then undone. Paul is warning against undoing the freedom that is offered in Christ, by thinking only of oneself. When we think only about our own interests and our own wants and desires without any consideration for another we fall back into slavery to self. Slavery to self puts me at the mercy of my own whims and appetites, eventually resulting in the loss of community and finally self-destruction.

Paul calls the Galatians to live freely in community. To live with the freedom found in Christ and live freely among those who we love as much as we love ourselves. This kind of freedom balances personal freedom with true love for those with whom we share life and faith together.

Total disregard for anyone but me is anything but freedom. Who is it that you are called to share life, love and freedom with?
