Philippians 2:19-30
Reflect
In our passage today we see how important mentorship is. Paul demonstrates his love for two men that he has mentored. He speaks of Timothy as a son, unlike any other, who shows genuine concern for people’s welfare. He speaks of Epaphroditus as his brother, co-worker, fellow soldier and one who took care of his needs. Paul taught, modeled, and mentored younger Christians into leadership, and in return he was blessed with companionship, support, care, and respect. In Paul’s recommendation of these men, you can sense his pride and joy. Are you mentoring someone?
Paul also tells the Philippians to welcome Epaphroditus with great joy and honour, for he risked his life and almost died as their representative and for the work of the Gospel. The world honours people who are described in verse 21: “For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ”. We should be different, honouring those who do the work of the Gospel, often going where we cannot go, or doing what we cannot do.
We often have missionaries that our church supports and prays for who visit our church. I encourage you to welcome them with joy and honour, for they are doing the work of the Gospel as our representatives.
