Galatians 5:16-26
This semester we are continuing to be dedicated to our theme of “Dwelling in Freedom”, which has been a journey through the letter written to the Galatian church. The entirety of Chapter 5 speaks to the reality that Jesus has come to set people free from the bondage that shackles them. Living in the freedom that Jesus provides is intimately connected to walking by the Spirit. The Ephesians in Acts 19:2 represent many of that day that had never even heard of the Holy Spirit.
I believe that questions regarding the Holy Spirit continue to our day. There is an uneasiness and, even dissatisfaction, as many today read of the movement of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament and then conclude that the modern church is somehow lacking what the early church had, and that lack is somehow connected to the Holy Spirit.
Yes, for good reason today’s passage is known for the “works of the flesh” and the “fruit of the Spirit” sections. However, let’s together prayerfully back up and meditate upon the imperative found in v16.
Of all the words to use, why would Paul use the verb “walk” by the Spirit? Why not sit? Run? Live? Listen? Why walk?
What is unique about walking with someone?
When are you walking close by the Spirit?
