Philippians 4:14-23
Reflect
It is difficult to find a topic in Scripture that is more written about than finances and money, Ironically, there are few topics that Christians talk about amongst one another less than… yup, finances and money. We will even have discussions around healthy relationships, sexuality, other personal struggles, but bring up personal finances and money, and you’ll likely be talking with yourself.
If you ever want to know what a person truly values, look at their spending habits.
In today’s passage, Paul knows that the church in Philippi is deeply connected with him because they have sacrificed greatly for Paul to be able to have his needs met. They feel his needs, see what blessing is in their own hands, and are swift to make certain that Paul is also the recipient of the blessing. I heard once that God has made us conduits of His generosity, not reservoirs.
What a beautiful image is provided in verse 18. The sacrificial giving is pleasing to God. It’s what makes Him smile.
Does God enjoy when we struggle and need to sacrifice our lives or loot? That’s not the point; rather, God smiles when we love someone to the degree that we will give even though it hurts us. It’s about love.
What do your spending habits reveal about what you love and value? Who are you deeply connected with through your love motivated sacrifice?
