Matthew 4:1-11
Reflect
As we begin to settle into this new year, we recognize there are going to be challenges we will face. Some of the challenges may be regarding decisions that we have made concerning efforts to make this year different that of years past. Perhaps there are things that we have determined to do this year, or not do this year. How are you doing thus far?
Jesus provides us with a great model for how to stand firm in the face of temptation. When He was tempted to give in to His appetites, Jesus committed to feeding His spirit above anything else. When He was tempted to seek out notoriety, Jesus committed Himself to glorify God, not Himself. When He was tempted to grasp power for Himself, Jesus stood firm in giving all power and authority to His Heavenly Father. In all these situations Jesus used Scripture as His defense.
One Scripture that is very helpful in the face of temptation comes from 1 Corinthians 10:13: “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
We are promised a way out that will endure. I pray that we look for those ways out in the challenges we face today.
