This morning, Pastor Melissa will lead us to consider the story of a boatful of frantic disciples and a sleeping Jesus. In the midst of a furious storm, why does Jesus even ask the question: “Why are you afraid?” And why does he admonish them for their little faith?
Just a few verses earlier in Matthew 8:10, Jesus praises the faith of a Roman centurion. Consider the crowds, which included this centurion, who have limited access and insight into who Jesus is. He speaks to them in parables. They may witness a few healings. And the faith of some is worthy of praise because they choose to believe in the all-sufficient power of Jesus. In contrast, the disciples have an all-access pass to Jesus. He privately explains the parables to them (Mark 4:33-34). They witness up close all the healings and deliverances. Yet, when they experience a personal ordeal that threatens their lives, they are frantic and fearful. Their faith is not in line with the measure of understanding and insight they have been given.
