Reflect
In January 1999 Graham Staines, a missionary to lepers in India, and his two sons were burnt alive in their truck by a Hindu mob. The news went around the world. But what touched the crowds in India, was the response of his wife Gladys. Announcing over the news, that she would forgive those murderers and press no charges.
Unheard of!! Not wanting revenge? How could she respond like that?
Peter must have found it pretty steep to forgive others three times, as the Pharisees in those days suggested. Maybe Jesus would have another approach to forgiveness ? But instead, Jesus lets us know: Forgiveness is meant for ALWAYS! Illustrated by the story of the unforgiving servant!
Already in Matthew 6 as Jesus teaches the Lord’s Prayer it becomes clear: “And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” (v.12)
Apply
We all, as sinners, rely on God’s forgiveness to be able to spend eternity with him. If I struggle to forgive someone, I picture myself in Heaven singing praises to God alongside with that person - who will also have their sin forgiven by grace! That view puts perspective on my grudges. Another way to check the forgiveness level of your heart, is by praying God’s blessing on the person that hurts you and wish them all the best!!
