Reflect
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Some readers of this passage have already caught the importance of where this scene takes place. They are in King Herod territory. Yes, the King Herod that made an end to John the Baptist’s opposition to Herod abandoning his wife. There is tension in the Pharisees camp between a more conservative wing (Shammaites) and the more liberal (Hillelites). That is why the word “tested” is used in v3. Jesus will die on a hill, but this is not the one.
Divorce and remarriage is a very contentious issue in church history. Many people and many churches suffered greatly from the handling of the issue. Today, there are other issues that have the potential to divide the church. There is a lot at stake as we are “tested”.
Regardless of the issue, we must resist the testing of becoming arrogantly confident. By remaining humble and teachable we model a learning posture.
This much I do know. Jesus tells us to steadily seek Him first (Mt 6:33). Only His truth (not my version of truth) will set us free (Jn 8:32). He will get us through any temptation (including the need to have the last word) we encounter (1 Cor 10:13).
