Devotional Guide for Friday, April 12

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

Reflect

Paul starts off the last chapter in 1 Thessalonians with words of encouragement and affirmation. He reminds them that they have an acute awareness of the times, Christ’s coming will be sudden and unpredictable, but more importantly, that they were children of light. Affirming their identity was a significant part of strengthening their courage and faith; it’s a strong reminder to persevere until the time has come.

It’s fascinating to see that Paul didn’t end with a word of encouragement for only individual effort, but also emphasizing community support (v11). The family of God is unique and beautiful. We must continue to remind one another of our future salvation so that we do not grow weary of living in the light, sobriety, and faithfulness in our journey with Christ. We have a responsibility to actively engage with our brothers and sisters in Christ and offer words and acts of encouragement, love, kindness, correction. The list goes on.

Paul urges the believers to be prepared by putting on faith, love and hope.

Apply

One way that we can put on faith, love and hope more practically and actively is through community. Spiritual communities that gather for the pure joy of loving Jesus with one another strengthens faith, practices love, and fosters hope. Meet up intentionally in a small group, mentorship/discipleship relationship, or with a friend.
