2 Timothy 4:1-8

Reflect

A turning point in my life was a memorial service I attended in my late 20s. I had been an acquaintance of the woman for several years. She was in her 70’s when she passed. The memorial of her life could be summed up as this: “She loved her family and friends, shopping, golfing, trips…. Oh and she loved Jesus.” I was aghast. “How did she love Jesus?”, I wanted to ask. There was so much emphasis on her hobbies. Her faith, though, seemed to be an addendum to her life. I came away from that service saying to my husband, “If I am only remembered for how I pursued personal enjoyment, then my life will have been a waste. I want my life to be centred on Christ, poured out for Him and for others first.”

In today’s passage, Paul gives excellent direction to Timothy in order that he would be faithful to the calling on his life, just as Paul has been. Paul is anticipating that his end is near and is able to confidently say that he has “fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith.” Will others be able to say this about you at your memorial? Have you been faithful to the calling God has given you? Is Christ central to your life and how you spend your time, or just an addendum?
